Senior Fellow Kerry Dumbaugh
Ms. Dumbaugh brings over 22 years of East Asian expertise to the service of Wittenberg University, which she joined in 2009 as a Senior Fellow at the East Asian Institute.
Since 1985, Ms. Dumbaugh has been a Specialist in Asian Affairs at the Foreign Affairs, Defense, and Trade Division of the Congressional Research Service (CRS), a research arm of the U.S. Congress. She specializes in analyzing the political, security, and human rights developments in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan and their implications for U.S. interests. She has written extensively on U.S. policy in Asia and on U.S. relations with Asian governments, and at one time served as the head of the Asia Section at CRS.
Ms. Dumbaugh is the moderator for a public TV program in the Washington area, “The China Forum,” involving interviews and discussions on national issues with scholars, former government officials, and other experts in the Asia policy field. Her work has been published in the Washington Journal of Modern China, the University of Pennsylvania Journal of International Economic Law, by the Congressional Research Service, and in other publications.
Dr. Ken Bladh, Provost of Wittenberg University welcomed Kerry aboard in November, 2009:
It is with great pride that I announce the appointment one of our own graduates, Ms. Kerry Dumbaugh (class of 1974) as the first Senior Fellow of the Wittenberg East Asian Institute. Her advanced studies after leaving Wittenberg and continuing distinguished career as a specialist in Asian affairs for the Congressional Research Service provide her a broad perspective from which to advise and help us advance the mission of the Institute and our Program in East Asian Studies. After leaving Wittenberg (BA in East Asian Studies, Music), Kerry earned an MA in Chinese Studies and International Relations from the University of Pennsylvania and an MS in National Security Studies from the U.S. National War College.
A frequent invited presenter before congressional committees, international professional meetings, public policy institutes, radio and television, Kerry’s knowledge and broad network of professional contacts in the world of government, in the domestic and international business communities, and in higher education provide a rich resource for connecting Wittenberg students and faculty to the world beyond Springfield – particularly in Washington and East Asia. She has served as a visiting professor and lecturer at Chuo University, Tokyo.
Wittenberg is fortunate that Kerry is able and willing to share her expertise, experience, and contacts to support our academic programs as her other commitments permit from her home base in Washington, D.C.
